Learn how to choose the right packaging for your business.

How do I choose the right packaging?

Here are the first two steps in choosing the right packaging:

1. Make sure it's right for your product
Your packaging's primary purpose is to protect your product, from fulfilment to delivery. This means your choice should be determined by your product. For example, if your product is light and doesn't need additional protection (clothing, cosmetics etc.), a mailer box sealed with gummed tape is a good choice.

In other words, your packaging has to be appropriate for your product. Choosing packaging that isn't suitable will result in more breakage costs, more returns and more unhappy customers.

2. Make sure it's within your budget
We recommend spending 3-15% of your total product cost on packaging. That said, many companies spend more than this, sometimes up to 40% depending on the product and industry. The more you spend, the more options you’ll have, but however much you decide on, your packaging budget must always be commercially viable.

Note: Your packaging budget should account for both primary packaging and secondary packaging.

Use these two steps as a starting point. You may also want to consider branding options, sustainability targets, unboxing and more when choosing your packaging.
